Our salute
By Gavin Jones
We never signed up to fight this war,
But heard the call we could not ignore,
With gloves and masks, we stood proud and tall,
At the front lines we answered the call,
Darkness came, a blight upon the land,
Death did take our loved ones by the hand,
Through bitter tears we kept our heads high,
On we marched on, stared Death in the eye,
To our doctors, nurses and teachers
To our cleaners, police and drivers,
To every key worker and recruit,
Here's our thanks, our applause, our salute.
Our backs ache and legs start to tremble,
As true heroes start to assemble,
We face pain, disease and frustration,
Salvation comes through isolation,
Our children stare at the screen to learn,
Waiting for the day they can return,
To once again join hands with their friends,
Once the veil lifts and the lockdown ends,
To our doctors, nurses and teachers
To our cleaners, police and drivers,
To every key worker and recruit,
Here's our thanks, our applause, our salute.
Susan finds breathing with a mask hard,
But her eyes smile as she sees that hand,
Inside her heart is so scared and scarred,
Something her mum does not understand,
To reach high up she stands on tip toe,
Two hands joined, each side of a window.
Tom knows the whole route inside and out,
Which lane to take and which road to not,
Always on time was that bus throughout,
But its late today, Tom's feeling hot,
Shivers, coughs, the bus does not arrive,
One last smile, one last trip, one last drive.
To our doctors, nurses and teachers
To our cleaners, police and drivers,
To every key worker and recruit,
Here's our thanks, our applause, our salute.
The path will be clear, hope is not gone,
From the darkest night there will be dawn,
We will hug again, drink in the sun,
The war will be done, the battle won,
Scars may remain, but smiles will be seen,
Owed to the brave souls behind the scene,
Forever we will be in your debt,
You never gave up, we'll not forget,
To our doctors, nurses and teachers
To our cleaners, police and drivers,
To every key worker and recruit,
Here's our thanks, our applause, our salute.
