A church of lesser known saints
By J. D. Sparkes
Iconic symbols ushering in; pastoral helplines framed like hymn numbers;
familiar liturgy of lavatory.
Engaged - vacant: bog standard orthodoxy for simple public convenience;
doctrine of the door unchanging.
Cloistered stalls testify to a redeeming presence, deeds of dedicated souls;
seen, unseen, ignored.
Toilet ducking and diving, offering absolution for all mortal transgressions,
sanctifying the ablutions of strangers.
Finding contributions the relieved donate in passing; quick penny pilgrims,
leaving something in lieu of thanks.
Purifying the air with pine-fresh incense; anti-bac angels in the atmosphere,
guardians against the apocalyptic.
Sometimes flowers may appear; unattested miracles of lesser known saints,
divine manifestations; call and response of nature.
